Québec is golden at the Canada Games

CHARLOTTETOWN – A five run third inning was more than enough for Québec to claim their first gold medal in baseball at the Canada Games since 1993 with an 8-1 win over Alberta.

Alberta, who came up with perhaps the biggest upset of the tournament with their semi-final win over Ontario, were shut down in this game by Québec starter Jonathan Paquet (Ancienne Lorette, QC). He allowed only one run on three hits over five innings of work.

Québec put their first points on the board in that five-run third inning when Kevin Tremblay (Boucherville, QC) hit a double with the bases loaded to drive in all three runners and take a 3-0 lead. Tremblay would later score on an error to make it 4-0, and Michael Page (L’Épiphanie, QC) would score the fifth run on an RBI double from Alexandre Villeneuve (St-Jean Chrysostome, QC).

Québec would add runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings, including a solo-blast from Page. Alberta broke the shutout in the bottom of the seventh when Dale Anderson (Strathmore, AB) hit a solo home run for the Albertans only run of the game.

In the bronze medal game, Ontario took their frustration of their loss in the semis out on Manitoba as they would capture the bronze with an 8-2 victory.

Andrew Firth (London, ON) got things started offensively for Ontario in the bottom of the second when he hit a two-run shot off of Manitoba starter Cody Nevins (Brandon, MB) to give the Ontarians a 2-0 lead.

After Manitoba tied it up a 2-2 in the top of the fourth on a bases loaded walk to Josh Ginter (Winkler, MB) and a passed ball which allowed Garret Popplestone (Brandon, MB) to score, Ontario broke it open with five runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

Sean Bignall (Brampton, ON) started it off with an RBI single. Then, Sean Pisarski (Mississauga, ON) drove in Bignall with a triple. Pisarski would score on a Shawn Vale (Guelph, ON) RBI single, and finally Quinn Cummings (Toronto, ON), who pinch ran for Vale, scored on a RBI single from Todd Blair (Ajax, ON) and Ontario now held a 7-2 lead.

That was more than enough for Ontario starter Jordan Glover (Toronto, ON), who threw the complete game to earn the win. He allowed only three hits and struck out 10 during his outing.

Bignall got his second hit and RBI of the game in the fifth inning when he drove in Firth with a double to make it 8-2 for Ontario.
