Canada Cup Update: Day 3 Recap

MONCTON-Day 3 of the Baseball Canada Cup saw a total of eight round-robin games played. With the round-robin set to wrap-up on Saturday the playoff picture is beginning to take shape. Visit www.baseball.ca for the latest schedule, results and standings!

New Brunswick 4 Nova Scotia 2

A game that was originally scheduled for opening night but cancelled due to rain saw New Brunswick double-up on Nova Scotia 4-2. The game was scoreless until the sixth when Josh Dennis’ (Dieppe, NB) double cashed-in Travis Harris (Fredericton, NB). New Brunswick added three more runs in the top of the seventh and Andrew Case (Saint John, NB) managed to limit Nova Scotia to only two runs in the bottom of the seventh to preserve the victory. Case had seven strikeouts as he tossed a complete game, giving up both two runs on seven hits. Nova Scotia’s Scott Harrison (Eastern Passage, NS) had two hits in the loss while Alex Ostrov (Timberlea, NS) recorded seven strikeouts on the mound.

Ontario 8 BC 6

Ontario handed BC their first loss with an 8-6 win- one day after BC came back to beat Ontario, 4-3, in Pool A play. Ontario jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning thanks to RBI singles from Johnny Caputo (Toronto, ON) and Jacob Robson (Windsor, ON), while two bases-loaded walks and a sac-fly brought in the other runs. Although BC lost, Brady Rogers (Nanaimo, BC) was the story of the game as he hit three homeruns, accounting for all of BC’s runs. Rogers belted a solo blast in third, a three-run job in the fourth and a two-run homer in the sixth to give his team some life. However, Ontario’s Jake Marks (Brights Grove, ON) was able to nail down the win as he struck out five in 3 1/3 innings of work.

Québec 6 Alberta 4

Jean-Philippe Rousseau (Blainville, QC) went 3-for-4 with three RBI’s as Québec defeated Alberta 6-4. Québec scored four runs in the fourth and held-off a late charge from Alberta for the victory. Christopher Sauvé (Mascouche, QC) earned the win on the mound as he went five innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and three walks while fanning four. Alberta’s Mitch McGeein (Calgary, AB) had two doubles and an RBI in the loss.

Manitoba 14 Newfoundland 1

Manitoba improved their record to 4-0, good for first place in Pool B, with a 14-1 mercy-rule victory over Newfoundland. Luke Seburn (Winnipeg, MB) had a single, two doubles, a triple and four RBI’s while Chris Shaw (Winnipeg, MB) went 2-for-4 with three RBI’s to lead the charge for Manitoba. Manitoba starter Zachary Mayo (Mather, MB) went five complete innings giving up only one hit while fanning eight. Manitoba had an eight-run third inning.

Nova Scotia 5 PEI 0

Jesse Borden (Dartmouth, NS0 tossed a one-hitter and struck out eight as Nova Scotia shutout PEI 5-0. Nova Scotia struck for three runs in the first inning and received two-hit performances from Kyle Button (Halifax, NS) and Evan Williams (Dartmouth, NS) who also collected an RBI.

Ontario 3 Alberta 2

Nick Dimpfel (Richmond Hill, ON) hit a two-out double to bring the go ahead run home in the sixth inning which proved to be the difference as Ontario edged Alberta 3-2. Travis Seabrooke (Peterborough, ON) went the distance for Ontario as he gave up two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out six Alberta batters. Mitch McGeein (Calgary, AB) had an RBI double for Alberta.

Québec 10 BC 8

Québec handed BC their second loss of the day in a wild 10-8 game. After BC took a 3-0 lead in the first, thanks to a Brandon Todoruk (Abbotsford, BC) three-run homer, Québec answered back with nine runs in the second to take a commanding lead. Alex Clavet (St-Nicholas, QC) led the inning off with a solo homer and Québec took advantage of four BC errors while Jean-Philippe Rousseau delivered a run scoring double to cap the nine run outburst. BC clawed their way back into the game with four runs in the fourth and another run in the sixth, but Simon Gravel (Terrbonne, QC) nailed down the save with a pop-out and two strikeouts in the seventh.

Saskatchewan 8 New Brunswick 1

Tanner Spencer (Craik, SK) was dominant on the mound a he allowed only one hit and struck out eight as Saskatchewan dumped New Brunswick 8-1. Spencer lasted 5 1/3 innings giving up a run and three walks, while his offence managed eight runs on nine hits. With New Brunswick leading 1-0, Saskatchewan struck for six runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh. Nolan Benesh (Regina, SK) had two hits and two RBI’s while Kohl Bauml (Saskatoon, SK) had a double and two RBI’s.
