LAUSANNE, Switzerland – The International Baseball Federation (IBAF) and leaders from baseball around the world today presented their outline for baseball’s re-instatement to the Olympic programme in 2016. The presentation, which included IBAF President Dr. Harvey Schiller, Secretary General John Ostermeyer, Major League Baseball President and Chief Operating Officer Bob DuPuy, Major League Baseball Players Association Executive Director Donald Fehr, IBAF Anti-Doping Manager Jean-Pierre Moser and professional player Sidney de Jong of the Netherlands, outlined the best possible partnership between baseball and the Olympic programme. Sandra Montiero, president of the Portuguese Baseball Federation, and Ricardo Fraccari, president of the Italian Baseball Federation, are also in Lausanne this week to assist in the effort.
The 2009 MLB draft concluded today, with many Canadian born players being selected in the third and final day. Overall, the draft was a success for these Canadian players, many of whom have already represented their country in international tournaments.
Two current National Team Junior Players, short stop Wesley Darvill and right-handed pitcher Steven Inch were both taken early on day two of the draft. Respectively going in the 5th (170th overall) and 6th (197 overall) round. Darvill from British Columbia was selected by the Chicago Cubs and Inch from Alberta was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies.
OTTAWA – Canada’s team is sticking close to home with the 37th pick overall in the 2009 MLB First Year Player Draft as the Toronto Blue Jays selected left-handed pitcher James Paxton (Ladner, BC) out of the University of Kentucky.
