WBC Qualifier: Canada wins big over Great Britain in opener

Regensburg, Germany-Jimmy Van Ostrand (Richmond, BC) belted a two-run homer as part of an eight run seventh inning and Shawn Hill (Georgetown, ON) pitched 5 2/3 innings on the mound, only giving up one run, as Canada opened the World Baseball Classic Qualifier with a convincing 11-1 mercy-rule victory over Great Britain.

OTTAWA-Baseball Canada announced today twenty-eight players that will represent Canada at the World Baseball Classic Qualifier September 20th-24th in Regensburg, Germany. Canada will compete against the Czech Republic, Great Britain and host Germany for a spot in the 2013 World Baseball Classic.

OTTAWA – If yesterday’s semi-finals are any indication of what’s to come, then Sunday’s championship will go down to the wire.  Both Charlottetown and Fredericton managed to squeak out wins in two thrilling games.  Both teams have combined for only one loss throughout the tournament, and will be looking to take home the trophy to their respective cities.
