WNT to Play for Fifth

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team did all they could by beating Cuba 10-9 in a thrilling game at the Women’s World Cup. Unfortunately the Canadians needed help in the form of a USA victory over Australia to advance to the medal round. In the end it wasn’t meant to be as Australia walked all over USA 19-6.

Maracay, Venezuela- Martine Nadeau (Québec City, QC) was solid on the mound and the Women’s National Team used some timely hitting to beat Cuba 5-1 in the 5th place game at the Women’s World Cup. The game was called during the 5th inning because of rain and Canada was awarded the victory

OTTAWA- Trois-Riviéres edged Québec 3-2 to advance to the Gold Medal game at the Junior Championship. The game needed an extra inning and it was Trois-Riviéres, Symon Laplante (Sorel, QC) who scored the go ahead run in the top of the 8th when Québec made an error with the bases loaded. From there the game was in the hands of David Leblanc (Montréal, QC) who shut Québec down in the bottom of the 8th. Leblanc pitched the complete game and only gave up 4 hits. Québec forced extra innings in the bottom of the 7th when Kevin Tremblay (Boucherville, QC) scored on a passed ball.

Maracay, Venezuela-Kate Psota’s (Burlington, ON) 2 out RBI single highlighted a 4 run 7th inning as Canada beat Cuba 10-9 in a walk-off victory. The victory gives Canada life as they now hope for a USA victory over Australia later today which would advance them to the medal round of the Women’s World Cup.

OTTAWA- Sheldon Poirier (Abbotsford, BC) had an incredible day at the plate, belting 2 homeruns as Abbotsford cruised to an 11-1 win over Winnipeg South at the Peewee Western championship in Brandon, MB. Poirier’s first blast was a 3 run job in the 1st inning followed by a 2 run shot in the 2nd inning. The game was shortened to 5 innings because of the 10 run mercy rule. Luxton Glor (Winnipeg, MB) was 2 for 3 with an RBI to lead Winnipeg South offensively.

Maracay, Venezuela- The Women’s National Team lost their second straight contest of Round 2 at the Women’s World Cup by a score of 6-2 to Japan. The WNT now faces a must win game against Cuba if they hope to advance to the medal round.

OTTAWA: Dany Deschamps (Montréal, QC) had 2 hits and 2 RBI as Québec shut out Nova Scotia 8-0 at the Junior championship in Trois-Riviéres. Québec scored all 8 of their runs in the 2nd inning which saw a Deschamps double account for 2 of them.

OTTAWA- Championship season is about to kick in to high gear as three National Championship tournaments will commence this week. On August 19th the National Peewee Western event will begin in Brandon, Manitoba as well as the Midget Championship taking place in London, Ontario and the Junior Championship in Trois-Riviéres, Québec.
