National Championships: Summerside Takes Gold

September 12, 2010

Summerside, PEI- Summerside had a chance to capture the Gold Medal on their home turf against undefeated Halifax and were able to capitalize on the opportunity in the form of a 10-6 win. On the strength of Matthew Barlow’s (Summerside, PEI) complete game effort on the mound and an offence that scored runs in six out of seven innings, the host team sent their fans home happy. In the fourth inning with Summerside up 5-2, Jesse MacFarlane (North Carleton, PEI) knocked in a pair of runs with a single to give his club a commanding five run lead. MacFarlane’s hit was one of twelve that Summerside hit off Halifax pitcher Blair Dewtie (New Glasgow, NS) who although taking the loss, struck out eleven batters in the game. Summerside would score one run in the fifth and another two runs in the sixth to put the game out of reach. Halifax attempted a comeback by scoring three runs in the latter stages of the game, but it was too little too late as Barlow struck out the final batter to secure the victory.
